چکیده

In a series of five tests, liquid polyphosphate fertilizer solution was used to treat liquid dairy and swine manure to control odors. Potassium permanganate, a pesticide-wetting agent, nitrogen-zinc liquid fertilizer solution and a digestive deodorant were also used in several of the tests. All tests were evaluated by an odor panel for odor strength and odor quality. The polyphosphates did not control odors in liquid swine or dairy manure when added shortly after spreading or reduce odors significantly when added at regular intervals. Potassium permanganate at concentrations of 300-500 ppm was the most effective compound tested. The pesticide wetting agent also reduced odors.

A review of microbiology in swine manure odor control

Generation of odors is a complex process that involves many bacterial species, producing an extensive array of volatile organic compounds under different manure storage systems currently used. A lack of understanding of the basic microbiology in manure leads to a poor odor prevention and control from animal wastes. This review covers pertinent available information about the indigenous bacteria...

Characteristics of solids, BOD5 and VFAs in liquid swine manure treated by short-term low-intensity aeration for long-term storage.

A laboratory-scale experiment presents data that reveal the temporal characteristics of solids, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in the aerated liquid swine manure for minimizing odor generation potential during 190-day storage. The performance of 15-day aeration of liquid manure with initial total solids (TS) content from 0.5% to 4.0% was examined at low-intensi...

On-farm Comparison of Manure Application Methods in Terms of Ammonia and Odor Emissions and Costs

Ammonia and odor emissions from land application of dairy manure, and costs associated with manure land application methods are serious concerns for dairy owners, regulators, and the general public. Odor and ammonia samples from agricultural fields receiving liquid dairy manure applied by surface broadcast and subsurface injection were collected and analyzed. Costs associated with both of the m...

Toxicity of ozonated animal manure to the house fly, Musca domestica.

Swine manure slurries were ozonated at a dosage of 1 g/L and tested for their toxicity to the house fly (Musca domestica). The observed toxicity of ozonated swine manure was consistent and independent of origin of the swine manure. A dose (dilution) response curve was performed. A 50% dilution in the ozonated swine manure slurry resulted in 90% reduction in toxicity. Neither the synthetic nor o...

Methane and Manure: Feasibility Analysis of Price and Policy Alternatives

Anaerobic digestion has a number of benefits as a manure treatment technology, including greenhouse gas and odor reduction, increased nutrient availability, and reduced pathogen risk. There is also a potential for electricity generation and energy recovery, although this is only achieved at additional cost. The economic feasibility of the energy conversion technology varies significantly with s...
